Protect Your Sewer Lines From Damage
There are many actions you can take to prevent your sewer lines from becoming blocked and causing a backup. A clogged line causes nightmares for homeowners who experience them. It smells, causes a mess, and can be costly and time consuming. Here are a few tips for preventing them in the first place.
- Cut Tree Roots – Tree roots can damage and crack sewer lines causing backups and other problems.
- Properly Dispose of Grease – Do not put cooking oil down the drain. As grease cools off, it solidifies. If it is poured down the line then it will solidify in the owner’s line, the drain, or the main sewer line causing it to become constricted. This eventually causes a clog.
- Replace Your Lines with Plastic Ones – Plastic pipes will prevent tree roots from damaging the line and prevent corrosion from the movement of waste.
- Fix Illegal Plumbing Connections – Do not connect sump pumps, French drains, and other flood control systems to your main sewer line. It is illegal and can cause clogs. Contact a plumber to fix any illegal connections.
- Install a Backwater Prevention Valve – A properly installed backwater prevention valve will allow sewage to go out but not come back in. Hire a professional plumber to properly install one.
